As part of the school’s 2023 Charter commitment to protect our planet, one of our pledges is to offer free educational events, by experts, for our school and local community to attend. This evening is the first of these programmes. We will be joined by a panel of experts and offer an educational and interactive evening on all things birds, arachnids and other local wildlife!
Suitable for both children and adults.
Attendance is free, but please reserve a ticket so we know how many to expect.
6pm Pre-event: Bird-Spotting at RLS (optional – limited numbers)
Wander the school grounds, with a local birdwatcher, looking, listening, and identifying birds. Find out how to listen and spot different bird species and technology available to identify the,. Finish at the Discovery Centre to bring together findings for the evening talks.
The pre-event is primarily aimed at RLS students and families.
Evening Starts at 7.00pm
7.20pm Introduction by Richard Goodlad A local and keen birdwatcher and parent to 2 former pupils at the school.
7.30pm How to Spot Birds using technologies by Simon Nichols and Hasan Al-Farhan
What to look for when and an introduction to new technology that helps us find and identify them.
8.00pm Spider Identification by Bill Parker
All about Spider Identification and the work of the British Arachnological Society (Bill will have a number of live samples
from his garden and surrounds).
8.30pm The joys of local patch bird watching by Harry Appleyard
The joys of local patch bird watching: featuring highlights from Harry’s local birding and explore how
to make the most of it in your local area.
9.00pm Q & A
An opportunity to mingle and ask questions (there’s no such thing as a silly one) and meet some ofthe presenters.

Speaker Biographies
Simon Nichols
Simon is one of the UK’s top ‘twitchers’ having recorded over 500 bird species in the UK. These days he
tries to stay local to Buckinghamshire, completing a 24-hour bird race most years in the county. However, Simon still holidays in Shetland and Scilly Isles in peak weeks hoping for rare birds to fall.
Hasan Al-Farhan
Hasan started Birdwatching in very recent years and gets himself onto his local Milton
Keynes patch at every opportunity. He has a key interest in bird migration and spends any spare time
planning his next UK trip!
Harry Appleyard
Based in the ever-growing city of Milton Keynes, Harry has been studying birds (and other wildlife)
across a wide variety of suburban habitats on his home patch since 2008, now boasting a list of 140
species!
Bill Parker
Bill holds a degree in Earth Sciences from Oxford University and is passionate about the natural world and is a keen Birder, a licenced bird ringer and wildlife sound recordist. He is membership
officer for the UK Arachnological Society and Buckinghamshire County recorder for Spiders.
