I’ve been a Chartered Accountant since 1965 and still practising after 55 years.
Are you doing what you thought you’d be doing after you left school?
What would you say is your biggest achievement to date, the thing you’re most proud of? Professionally or personally!
Lecturing to 100 chartered accountants 45 years ago.
Was there a particular teacher, or a moment at school that particularly inspired you?
In 1953 to 1958 there were only 90 boys and 90 girls in the school and all teachers inspired me. George Embleton would attend cricket nets in the lunch hours and spend time coaching us.
How important do you think your school days were in shaping who you are today?
The variety of different subjects inspired me to take an interest in everything so school was everything to me in my future life.
What’s your work:life balance like? How important is that to you?
In semi-retirement it is great. Never forget that your body is the only one you have; look after it and keep fit.
What advice would you give to today’s students who may be struggling to choose which path to take beyond school?
Choose subjects you enjoy and then try to find a work role which will give you as much flexibility as possible in future.
Finally, do you have a favourite quote, expression or mantra which inspires you to keep going?
All relationships have to be treated with the “utmost good faith.” Trust is everything; once trust is broken in business or marriage relationships fail.
