Welcome to the Royal Latin School – Headteacher’s Welcome

It is with great pride that I welcome you to The Royal Latin School – a school  which has been a cornerstone of the Buckinghamshire community for over six centuries. Established in 1423, The Royal Latin School is a coeducational state grammar school with over 1,300 students.

Our school vision at the Royal Latin School is to create an environment where every student is happy and able to reach their full academic and personal potential through developing the necessary skills and qualities. The key word here is ‘happy.’ A happy school is not defined by constant smiles, but by a deep sense of belonging where every individual matters. We take great pride in our strong sense of community, where students, staff, parents, governors, and alumni (Old Latins) come together to uphold the school’s values and traditions, while also embracing innovation. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to foster a supportive and inclusive environment, ensuring that every student feels valued and empowered.

At the Royal Latin School we place a real importance on nurturing the Latin values and virtues which enables our students to thrive. Our approach to what we call ‘LATIN Learning’ is based on our overarching aim to develop happy students with:

The Integrity to Lead
The Resilience to Aspire
The Respect for Teamwork
The Courage to Innovate
The Compassion to Nurture

Our school motto is ‘High Expectations For All’. We pride ourselves on our high standards of behaviour and academic progress. Our outstanding results place us amongst the top performing state schools in the country. Crucial to this success is the expertise and enthusiasm of staff, all of whom are specialists in their own subject areas. At the Royal Latin School, we are deeply committed to nurturing the potential of every student, ensuring they grow into confident, well-rounded individuals who are ready to make their mark on the world.

Our broad and balanced academic curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire, encouraging students to explore their passions and excel in their studies. In practice this means that at A-level we have over 23 subjects to choose from, whilst at GCSE and Key Stage 3 students benefit from a similar breadth of offer. We are also able to broaden the curriculum through our programme of Electives which allows students to extend their learning beyond the formal curriculum.

To complement our academic curriculum, we offer a vast array of trips and visits across all departments, ensuring that education at the Royal Latin School extends far beyond the classroom. We believe in nurturing the whole person, which is why we provide a rich selection of extracurricular activities, educational excursions, and leadership opportunities that allow our students to thrive in all aspects of their lives. Upon joining the school, each student is placed in one of six Houses: Barton, Denton, Newton, Ruding, Stratton, or Verney. Our House system is a vital part of school life, offering opportunities for creativity, collaboration across year groups, and healthy competition in a wide range of House events. This system fosters a strong sense of belonging and encourages active participation in school life. It boosts confidence, enhances well-being, and supports personal development while promoting our Latin Values and Virtues, such as leadership, teamwork, and resilience.

At the Royal Latin School we are excited to continue our journey of growth and innovation, ensuring that every student who walks through our doors is prepared not only for academic success but for life beyond school as well. Having recently celebrated our 600th anniversary, we continue to look to the future to further develop the school’s facilities and ensure that our students have access to the very best facilities and learning experiences. Whether you are a prospective student, a parent, or an Old Latin, I invite you to explore what makes the Royal Latin so special.
